Florida's American Indian population has increased by nearly 30,000 since 1970. The 1990 census figure of 36,335 American Indian, Eskimo, and Aleut people in Florida may be distorted because of the tendency in recent years for non-Indians to claim American Indian ancestry. This increase also reflects the migration to Florida of American Indians from tribes in other parts of the United States and Canada.
In south Florida are a number of large Miccosukee and Seminole state reservations and trust lands. In Tampa are small pieces of Seminole trust land, one of which contains a bingo facility. Northwest Florida is home to Creek Indians and some of their descendants, including members of the Porch Band of Creek Indians, a federally recognized tribe centered near Atmore, Alabama, and members of the Florida Tribe of Eastern Creeks, an organization of Creek Indian descendants with members concentrated in Calhoun and Walton counties.
